Born of an Entrepreneur’s Mind
In 1962, Ramesh Pai founded Karnataka Consumer Products Limited, the predecessor of Kurlon, after learning about the use of rubberized coconut-coir fiber in high-end car seats. He rightly assumed that with India being one of the world’s top coconut producers, he will have an abundance of coconut husk sources – truly, a business opportunity just waiting to be grabbed.
After bringing in Australian technology to transform coconut fiber into rope, he started developing mattresses, cushions and mats. Today, Kurlon is among India’s most notable manufacturers of bedding products with over 125 mattress models made in 9 facilities across Karnataka, Orissa, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. Its products are distributed and sold in over 7,000 dealership stores and 70 branches and stock points across India.
Kurlon is also a multi-awarded company recognized for its innovations in the bedding industry. Its awards include the Outstanding Performance in Export of Rubberized Coir Products granted by the Coir Board of India; the ShreshthaSuraksha Puraskar award from the National Safety Council of India for its outstanding performance in the implementation of occupational health and safety; and the Reader’s Digest award, among others.
The company manufactures several lines of mattresses in various thicknesses from 4 to 5 inches with different warranty periods on the models, usually between 1 to 12 years. In terms of prices, Kurlon mattresses are generally less expensive than other more well-known brands in the United States, such as Sleepwell.
Make Your Choice
The Indian bedding manufacturer has a wide range of collections that can address the unique needs and wants in innerspring, foam and therapeutic mattresses of most consumers. When making your choice, especially when you are buying online, you have to carefully consider all relevant factors including comfort and support provided (i.e., materials used and mattress thickness), price and value offered, and warranty period, among others. You want to ensure that you can actually live with, so to speak, your purchase especially since you will be sleeping on it for at 6 hours a day for several years.
Kurlon has the following mattresses in terms of the core materials used with each type having several models.
Spring Mattresses
These come in two types, namely, open spring with a range of comfort levels from softer to firmer (i.e., orthopedic) grades with the coils running from head to foot to prevent “roll together”; and pocket spring with innersprings that work independently. In terms of comfort and support, pocket spring beds are the better option because of its construction – all the individual springs have their own pocket of cushioning material and filling, which are then vertically placed and distributed inside the mattress.
The result: Each of the individual springs push against your body weight as you sleep such that your movements will not be transferred to another part of the bed, thus, letting your bedmate enjoy his/her sleep.
Models include Valentino, Panacea, and 5 Star.
Memory Foam
Many of Kurlon’s foam mattresses have memory foam as its comfort layer. The viscoelastic foam easily contours to the body’s shape and, thus, provides the best comfort and support especially for the pressure points on the head, neck, shoulders, hips and knees. For this reason, it is the best option for people who have issues with proper spine alignment while sleeping.
Emphasis must be made that a memory foam mattress will likely be more expensive than its innerspring counterparts. Models include Convenio, which has a double layer of PUF and memory foam; Imagine, which has double layers, too, and a knitted antimicrobial fabric; and Mermaid with a polyester bonded fabric.
Rubberized Coir
Mattresses made from rubberized coir are also known for their durability, comfort and support, and ability to conform to the sleeper’s body shape. Rubberized coir is obviously not the sole material since it is combined with a latex solution, which results in a combination of better air circulation and better support in a firm mattress.
Since Kurlon’s first mattresses were made of rubberized coil, the company has nearly perfected this line. Models include Klassik with bonded foam and high-density rubberized coir covered in quilted tapestry and Super Deluxe designed with ACD Technology.
Therapeutic
This is a line of mattresses especially designed for the improvement of sleep quality among the elderly and sick people although everybody can use them, too. Models include Spinekare, which has a memory foam and rubberized coir core with a quilted tapestry cover coupled with ZPP technology; and New Ortho, which has a high-resilient foam core on rubberized coir.
